Apple’s iOS Outperforms Google’s Android on Security Measures, Symantec Reveals



Fragmented: Unlike the iOS operating system that only runs on Apple-branded products, the Android operating system runs on mobile devices manufactured by a host of companies. Some companies might provide hardware that is more secure than others. Moreover, the manufacturer of the device can use a custom ROM or base operating system that has software installed that cannot be easily removed or analyzed for malicious intent.

FIDO-certified hardware security keys are provided by third-party providers such as Yubico. The FIDO Alliance maintains a list of all FIDO-certified products that are compatible with FIDO specifications. FIDO authentication standards are based on public key cryptography, which enables strong, phishing-resistant authentication that is more secure than passwords. According to the data, Apple accounts for just under half of all US smartphone sales in the past three years. In the same period, Samsung captured a little more than half of Android sales. The data says that Apple has accounted for 43% of US smartphone sales over the past three years, compared to Samsung at 31% and LG at 9%.


At a time when Apple, Mozilla and other tech giants are taking steps to prevent users from browsing the Web with outdated versions of Java, Yahoo! is pushing many of its users in the other direction: The free tool that it offers users to help build Web sites installs a dangerously insecure version of Java that is more than four years old.
